The Best Way To Backup Your Personal Files - Part 6

Thank you for joining us today. I'm Rudy Stebih and this is HelpDeskTV for Windows 7. In this last part of our 6 part series on backing up your computer, we are going to show you how to restore your data should your hard drive tragically crash on you or have accidently deleted your files.

OK. So your hard drive crashed and you've lost all of your photos. Or you've accidently deleted a file off your computer. Now you'd like to restore those files from your online backup. No worries, we're now going to show you how to do that.

But first, if you haven't viewed the 1st 4 parts of our video backup strategy series entitled 'The Best Free Way to Backup Your Personal Data', you should go ahead and view these videos first as it will walk you through step-by-step the initial installation of CrashPlan and how to setup your automated backup plan.

Now, let's go ahead and retrieve the deleted file or files from your computer backup. First start CrashPlan, and then select the Restore menu.

Here you will be presented with a list of files & directories backed up. The drop down menu at the top of the directory listings will allow you to display from which backup source you wish to restore from. In our case, because we setup both a local & cloud based storage solution, we have the option to choose from which backup set we wish to restore from. Here we will choose the CrashPlan Central backup set.

You can also search for a file to restore, which may be quicker than drilling down hundreds of directories, or you can simple select the files from the list if they are within reach.

Below the directory listing, you will see statistics on how many files & directories you are restoring as well as a total byte count of files being restored. You can also choose to display the files that were deleted from your computer and marked as deleted in your backup set.

Underneath the directory listing, you have some options to choose from. First, clicking the 'most recent' link will get you a calendar popup to choose a file version date you want to restore from, or you can select from the most recent backup version.

You can also choose to restore to your Desktop, the original location, or a new folder just by clicking on the word 'Desktop'. And finally, you can choose to rename any existing files or overwrite those existing files on restore.

Once you've selected your options, click 'Restore' and VIOLA!!! Your file or files are now on their way to being restored back to your computer.

I hope you enjoyed our series on Backing Up Your Personal Files here on HelpDesk TV. If you need further assistance in setting up CrashPlan as your backup solution, you can contact us on our support forum here at 'http://forums.helpdesktv.ca'.

Thanks for watching!
